Feeling Good

A thought for today.Because of my amazing job I get to see truly wonderful people everyday. Sometimes they are people that I have never met and sometimes they are people I know really well. I get paid to get to know people. To hear about their concerns and listen to their dreams, is truly one of the biggest blessings in my daily life! I cant believe how remarkable people are, how much they have to offer, how creative and talented they are. I feel so lucky that I am allowed to glimpse into their lives and share in their journey. So for those of you that I have met, have known for a while or are yet to meet, thank you! Thank you for allowing me to share in your bliss! The things that I have learned from you have changed and enriched my life. So as I retire to bed this night I am struck with the gift of a greeting I learned todaywhen you see the people in your world, instead of asking, How are you? Ask, Are you feeling good? Because if you think about it, feeling good always makes you feel good!

Professional product vs. Store Brand

Q: Why would I buy products from the salon for my hair when I can buy them cheaper from the grocery store?A: The following is a blog I did for a hairdresser only site that explains why:Imagine doing your job with out the tools you use to do it! What if someone came in today and took away your curl cream, your hairspray, your flat iron, your blow dryer, your clips and your favorite hair brush! They out of kindness replaced them and the shampoo and conditioner on the back bar with products and tools you can get a the local grocery store. How good would you be at your job? How much harder, how much longer would you have to work to make their hair work, and feel even half as good as you can today with all of the products and tools you now have the luxury of using? What would those products and tools be doing to your work? To your beautiful art? Now ask yourself why you dont educate your clients about these products and tools! When your clients ask, Iis there a store brand that you would recommend for my hair because it is more affordable? Why dont you tell them the truth? If it is affordability you are looking for you should probably try laundry detergent because it will be the largest quantity for your buck. This is not misleading! The Affordable products that you so graciously recommend arent any better for the hair and to be honest are also not that affordable considering that most of them have a ph nearly as high as perm solution! This inevitably will destroy the color you put in their hair, wasting the money they spent on it. Not to mention the damage it does to the hair and scalp when you raise the ph that high and then coat the hair with wax residue. Its like wrapping the hair in plastic wrap and then setting it in the sun for six hours. So what is the most affordable product? Product that has quality ingredient that are formulated to protect your work. Product that will support your clients hair and scalp health. Product that you have prescribed thoughtfully for your clients specific needs. Product you have taught your client to use properly so that they arent just wasting it.If you couldnt do your job with out you precious tools and productswhy do you make your clients? Because you arent a sales person? Well good, dont ever sell even one client a product they dont needbut dont cheat them out of the products they do! Overcome your fear of sales but telling your clients what you used on their hair. Show them where you find the products they need on the shelves. Then let them decide what they can afford and what they cant afford to miss. For those of you who do take care of your cliets product and tool needs, I solute you!

Making it count

Q: What goes into deciding what the best hair cut or hair color is for me?A: The following is an article I wrote for a private stylist site that answers this question:It seems to me that if you are going to pay good money for your hair, the person charging you should know what they are doing! It isnt enough to just do what your told, as a stylist you need to go into every service looking at each individual differently and not just the first time, but every time they are in your chair. Our clients live each day going through changes, their skin coloring fluctuates, their weight increases and decreases having an impact on their face shape in small and sometimes large ways. Life styles change, demands on their time increase and decrease, stresses at work change their energy level and their bodies ability to keep up the status quo. Work out routines change, diets are started, altered, quit, started again. We cant just do the same old thing and call it good and still call ourselves professionals. In our industry communication is more than just doing what we are told, it is collaborating with our clients for a desired image, not a just a hair cut. So I challenge you, all who would call yourselves Professional Hair Stylists, Color Specialists, Make-up Artists, Waxing Specialists, take the time each time a client new or old sits in your chair to really and truly look at them. Listen to their goals with your ears open and your creativity poised in action and give them not just a Bob or an A-Line or a Standard Partial. Give them a signature look that is unique and creative. Give them a color treatment that suites every part of who they are today not 6 weeks ago. Give them what they are paying for, not a standard treatment pulled off of a menu, but a planned experience they will feel belongs to only them. Use your talent! Use your knowledge! Be the artist that you know you are capable of and send your art work out of your salon looking and feeling like a masterpiece.

Why wax

We all know that shaving is convenient but who doesnt hate it? Ingrown hairs, razor burn, general discomfort and weekly to daily maintenance can be a big bummer! If done properly in a clean environment, waxing can be a wonderful alternative to shaving. I have spent considerable time creating the perfect waxing experience. The wax I use is of the highest quality. I take my time and am extremely detailed. Each placement is calculated to minimize pain and maximize skin health. I have quick hands and special tricks to calm the skin after each removal. The great news is that not only does the hair take longer to grow back, it will actually become thinner over time making it softer and less prone to becoming ingrown. Perhaps the best part of waxing is that it is virtually impossible to have razor burn!As far as maintenance goes, I recommend waxing every three to four weeks without any tweezing in between. Hair grows in fazes so if you can get all of the hair at its end stage and remove it, it helps to have a cleaner look that is easier to maintain. In addition, for those with sensitive skin that is predisposed to ingrown hair, I recommend using and skin exfoliant to help ward off infected follicles. I can help you determine the best exfoliant for your skin when you come in.
